THE DEFINITIVE 2026 JOURNEY

NIX
EUROPEAN
DRIFT

30 DAYS · 12 COUNTRIES · 4,042.2 MILES · ONE CAMPERVAN

I had imagined a journey like this for years. Then I pointed Vanilla towards the Channel and finally began it.
PROLOGUE · THE DREAM

THE DREAM
BECAME THE ROAD.

I had imagined a major European campervan journey for years. Vanilla made it possible to stop imagining and point the bonnet towards the Channel.

For one month I carried my bedroom, kitchen, shelter, power system, cameras and drones in one small grey VW. I woke somewhere different almost every morning, with no employer’s alarm clock and no package-tour timetable deciding what the day had to look like.

Travelling alone was part of the achievement. I could change direction because a road, a view or a place looked interesting—and I proved to myself that I could genuinely do it.

“This was more than a road trip. It was the moment the life I had imagined became the road beneath my wheels.”

CHAPTER 01 · THE DEPARTURE

THE OFF

STAFFORDSHIRE · LE SHUTTLE · CALAIS · BELFORT

I left Staffordshire with a month ahead of me and only the broad shape of a route. Vanilla was checked, the cameras were packed and Octo had the best seat in the house.

Le Shuttle carried us beneath the Channel. A very late first French aire was not glamorous, but after I had levelled Vanilla and put the kettle on, ordinary life felt a long way behind us.

8–9 MAY · INTERLAKEN · LAUTERBRUNNEN · WENGEN
CHAPTER 02 · INTO THE ALPS

THE FIRST GREAT REVEAL

INTERLAKEN · LAUTERBRUNNEN · WENGEN

Switzerland changed the scale of everything. Interlaken led into Lauterbrunnen, where the cliffs rise almost vertically and waterfalls appear wherever you look.

Vanilla settled at Camping Jungfrau and the road gave way to the railway for car-free Wengen. This was the first place that made the timetable irrelevant.

CHAPTER 03 · OVER THE MOUNTAINS

THE ROUTE BECAME THE ADVENTURE

BRIENZ · ST MORITZ · POSCHIAVO · LAKE COMO

Leaving Lauterbrunnen did not mean leaving the Alps. The route worked east through Brienz, Surses and St Moritz before dropping towards Poschiavo and Italy.

These were proper driving days: tunnels, passes, long climbs and views through Vanilla’s windscreen that made every sensible arrival time negotiable.

CHAPTER 04 · TUSCANY

WARM ROADS AND OLD STONE

LUCCA · PISA · FLORENCE · SIENA · ASCIANO · SAN GIMIGNANO

Tuscany arrived in warmer light and roads that seemed designed to curve around the landscape rather than argue with it. Siena and Asciano supplied the rolling country I had imagined before leaving home.

Vanilla looked wonderfully small against it all. I stopped often, took far too many photographs and decided that efficiency was a poor reason to drive straight past anywhere.

15–18 MAY · BOLOGNA · MODENA · VERONA · VENICE · TRIESTE · LOVRAN · ROVINJ
CHAPTER 05 · VENICE AND THE ADRIATIC

THE ROAD TURNED EAST

BOLOGNA · MODENA · VERONA · VENICE · TRIESTE · LOVRAN · ROVINJ

Northern Italy shifted the journey from hills towards water. Bologna, Venice and Trieste marked the turn east, then the Adriatic appeared ahead of the bonnet.

Old streets, busy roads and a new coastline made this the hinge of the journey—the point where the map opened towards Slovenia and Croatia.

19–21 MAY · ZADAR · SPLIT · STOBREČ · KRVAVICA
CHAPTER 06 · SOUTH THROUGH CROATIA

THE COAST ROAD

ZADAR · SPLIT · STOBREČ · KRVAVICA

Croatia became one of the great driving sections of the month. The road repeatedly lost the Adriatic behind a headland and then found it again in a different shade of blue.

Harbours, islands, pine-framed water and small coastal places turned the journey south into a succession of reasons to pull over.

22–23 MAY · ORAŠAC · DUBROVNIK · CAMP POD MASLINOM
CHAPTER 07 · THE FURTHEST POINT

DUBROVNIK

ORAŠAC · DUBROVNIK · CAMP POD MASLINOM

Dubrovnik was proof. Written down, Staffordshire to the far south of Croatia sounds like a route; standing beside Vanilla beneath the olive trees, it felt like something we had genuinely achieved together.

The old city brought polished stone and warm roofs above the Adriatic. Back at camp there was clear water below, cameras charging and the freedom to stay. Vanilla still felt completely like home.

24–25 MAY · BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA · THE COAST · NORTHBOUND
CHAPTER 08 · TURNING NORTH

THE COAST CHANGED DIRECTION

BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA · THE COAST · NORTHBOUND

Leaving Dubrovnik changed the direction of the journey, but not its pace. The road followed the coast north and crossed Bosnia and Herzegovina before returning to Croatia.

Border booths, roadside discoveries and the changing coastline made the return feel like another journey rather than a retreat.

CHAPTER 09 · BACK TO THE MOUNTAINS

PLITVICE, BLED AND AUSTRIA

PLITVICE LAKES · LAKE BLED · ZELL AM SEE

Plitvice changed water from open sea to lakes, woodland and movement. Lake Bled and Zell am See then restored the mountain rhythm.

By now Vanilla and I had a routine: arrive, level up, put the kettle on, charge what needed charging and slide the door open to discover the next temporary front garden.

CHAPTER 10 · GERMANY AND CZECHIA

THE NORTHERN LEG

MUNICH · CHEB · WOLFSBURG · AUTOSTADT · HANOVER · DEVENTER

The northern leg gathered mileage: Munich, Cheb, Wolfsburg, Autostadt and Hanover, then on towards the Netherlands.

Autostadt suited a journey whose other main character wore a VW badge. The days were getting longer, but there was still room for a town square, a photograph and the long way round.

CHAPTER 11 · THE LONG WAY HOME

VANILLA POINTED WEST

DEVENTER · BRUGES · DE PANNE · DUNKIRK · CALAIS · STAFFORDSHIRE

Deventer gave way to Bruges and De Panne. Familiar names began appearing on the signs: Dunkirk, Coquelles, the Channel. For the first time in a month the route felt like an ending.

Thirty days earlier Europe had been somewhere beyond the windscreen. Now Staffordshire was appearing on the signs again, with the whole Drift behind Vanilla’s tailgate.

Vanilla, the grey VW T6.1 campervan that carried John across Europe
THE OTHER MAIN CHARACTER

THE LITTLE GREY VAN
THAT CROSSED EUROPE.

For a month Vanilla was transport, bedroom, kitchen, shelter, camera-charging station, campsite, viewpoint and familiar home in unfamiliar countries.

The space was compact, but the freedom it unlocked was enormous. The fridge kept the essentials cold; solar, the leisure battery and portable power kept the cameras, drones and inevitable tangle of cables alive. Each arrival ended the same dependable way: level the van, put the kettle on and open the door to a new temporary front garden.

The destinations made the landmarks. The roads gave the journey its character.

THE ROADS BETWEEN THE PLACES
“THE DESTINATIONS GAVE THE TRIP ITS LANDMARKS. THE ROADS GAVE IT ITS CHARACTER.”

Mountain passes and long motorways; coastal bends and border crossings; quiet rural roads, tunnels and diversions that were annoying for ten minutes and memorable afterwards. Four thousand miles sounds like a statistic. Through Vanilla’s windscreen it looked different every day.

EPILOGUE · 4 JUNE 2026

VANILLA
MADE IT HOME.

Thirty days earlier I had left Staffordshire with Europe somewhere beyond the windscreen. Behind us now were twelve countries, Alpine passes, Tuscan roads, the Adriatic coast, Dubrovnik, Bled, Austria, Germany, Belgium and thousands of photographs.

The Drift was never only about reaching Dubrovnik. It was about everything that happened because I decided to keep going.

For years it had been something I wanted to do. Now it was something I had done.

AND I WOULD DO IT ALL AGAIN TOMORROW.
