VICTRON
SMARTSOLAR.
THE LITTLE BLUE BOX RUNNING VANILLA'S SOLAR
How Vanilla turns daylight into electricity, data and off-grid freedom.
DAYLIGHT
DOING A SHIFT.
When Vanilla is parked and the engine is switched off, the roof quietly carries on producing electricity. There is no generator chuntering away, no engine idling and, when the battery and weather play nicely, no need to rely on campsite hook-up.
It is simply daylight being turned into useful electrical energy. The little blue box managing that process is my Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75/15. It is not the most dramatic-looking upgrade in Vanilla, but it may be one of the hardest-working.
FOLLOW THE
ENERGY.
MPPT means Maximum Power Point Tracking. In plain English, the controller keeps searching for the combination of panel voltage and current that gives the most useful power, then converts it into a controlled battery charge. Clouds, a changing sun angle, trees, partial shade, mornings, evenings and the traditional British arrangement of all four seasons before lunch keep moving the target. SmartSolar keeps looking for it.
THE
NUMBERS.
These are the published ratings for the 75/15 model. The controller limits available charging to 15A; it does not promise that every grey Tuesday in Staffordshire will produce 220 watts.
MY SOLAR
DASHBOARD.
Standing near Vanilla, I can connect directly to the SmartSolar and see what the system is doing now—and what it has managed over recent days.
The figures above demonstrate the proposed NIX presentation; they are not claimed as readings from Vanilla. Genuine VictronConnect history will replace illustrative values when supplied.
FOLLOW
THE SUN.
BULK → ABSORPTION → FLOAT
BULK
The controller supplies the maximum appropriate available charging power.
ABSORPTION
Charging becomes controlled as the battery approaches full charge.
FLOAT
The battery is maintained at a suitable lower voltage once charged.
☀️ → ☁️ → 🌤️
Generation falls as the light disappears. When the sun returns, SmartSolar searches again for the optimum operating point and carries on. It cannot manufacture sunshine.
Not even Victron has released a firmware update for the British weather.FROM A GLANCE
TO EVIDENCE.
VictronConnect history can show daily yield, maximum PV power, battery voltage and time spent in charging stages. Where supported, the history can be exported as CSV—ideal raw material for future NIX charts.

TWO VIEWS.
ONE BATTERY.
SMARTSOLAR
What the solar system is producing and how it is charging.
SMARTSHUNT
What is happening at the battery, including current flowing in and out.
Through VE.Smart Networking, compatible Victron equipment can share useful battery information wirelessly.
THREE WAYS
TO RECHARGE.
THE KIT THAT MAKES
VANILLA, VANILLA.
Solar contributes energy to the leisure battery and electrical system; it does not directly power every appliance. The battery remains the reservoir supporting Vanilla's loads when the sun, quite reasonably, clocks off.
REMOTE VICTRON
MONITORING.
Bluetooth is excellent when I am close to the van. A compatible GX communications device could take system data online through Victron VRM, giving me remote monitoring and a proper electrical logbook. That is the planned next stage—not something I am pretending is already installed.

QUIETLY
MORE CAPABLE.
The SmartSolar is not the most visually dramatic upgrade to Vanilla. It is simply one of the devices quietly making the campervan more capable, more understandable and more independent.
Sunlight comes in.Data comes out.
Vanilla keeps going.
