There are modifications you notice from fifty yards away.

Then there are the details you only discover when you get closer.

Those are usually my favourites.

This next chapter in Vanilla’s evolution is not about changing the shape of the van, adding another piece of equipment or covering the bodywork in graphics.

It is something far smaller.

Something tucked away behind the wheels.

Something that will probably make absolutely no measurable difference to how Vanilla drives.

And yet I am ridiculously excited about it.

I’M PAINTING THE BRAKE CALIPERS NEON ORANGE. 🧡⚙️

Not red.

Not yellow.

Not black.

Orange.

Very, very NIX Orange.

🩶🥂🧡 THE COLOUR EQUATION

Vanilla already has the perfect foundation for this.

The bodywork is Indium Grey, which gives me that dark, industrial, technical base I have always loved.

The new 17-inch Leighton LV4 wheels introduce champagne.

Black remains around the tyres, trim and mechanical hardware.

And then there is orange.

The little pulse of colour running through the whole NIX identity.

So the combination becomes:

🩶 INDIUM GREY // BODY

🥂 CHAMPAGNE // WHEELS

⚫ BLACK // HARDWARE

🧡 NEON ORANGE // BRAKES

The orange will not dominate the wheel.

That is not the idea.

The LV4 should remain the star.

The caliper will sit behind the spokes, partly hidden in shadow.

Champagne.

Shadow.

Orange.

Shadow.

Champagne.

That tiny glimpse of colour is exactly what I am after.

🧡 WHY ORANGE?

I could easily have chosen red.

Red brake calipers are almost the default answer.

Yellow would have looked sporty.

Black would have disappeared quietly into the background.

But none of them really felt right.

Orange does.

Orange has gradually become part of the visual language of NIX.

Grey roads.

Dark machinery.

Stormy skies.

Warm sunsets.

Orange warning markings.

The glow of evening light against an industrial landscape.

Those colours have followed me through photography, campervan travel, bikes, graphics and the website.

Now they are following me all the way into the wheel arches.

And that means the brake calipers really only had one destination.

⚙️ NOT JUST ORDINARY PAINT

This is not a case of buying an aerosol can and pointing it vaguely at the brakes.

The FOLIATEC system is a dedicated two-component brake-caliper coating.

The kit contains the cleaner, basecoat, colour coating, hardener and the basic tools needed to prepare and finish the job properly.

And there is one particularly important ingredient.

THE WHITE BASECOAT. 🤍

Neon colours behave differently to ordinary solid colours.

Paint bright orange straight onto a dark old caliper and some of that brightness disappears.

So before Vanilla gets orange brakes...

Vanilla gets white brakes.

For a brief period, this project is going to look completely bonkers.

Perfect.

🤍 WHY THE WHITE BASE MATTERS

The white layer effectively becomes the light source underneath the Neon Orange.

It gives the colour something bright to sit on rather than allowing the dark metal underneath to swallow the intensity.

So the process is not:

dirty caliper ➜ orange

It is:

DIRTY ➜ CLEAN ➜ PREPARED ➜ WHITE ➜ ORANGE

That extra stage is precisely why the finished result should have much more punch.

🔧 OFF THE VAN

The plan is to have the calipers removed by the vehicle technician.

That is exactly how I want the job done.

Removing them gives much better access to the castings.

It makes cleaning easier.

It makes masking easier.

It makes the edges easier to reach.

And it gives the paint a fighting chance of looking as though it belongs there rather than as though somebody attacked the brakes through the spokes with a brush.

More importantly, the mechanical parts of the caliper can remain mechanical.

This is still a braking system.

The appearance matters.

But the engineering matters more.

🛑 THE NIX RULE

There is a very simple rule for this entire project:

🧡 VISUAL SURFACE = ORANGE

⚙️ FUNCTIONAL SURFACE = LEAVE IT ALONE

The visible caliper body can be orange.

Anything that needs to move, slide, seal, clamp, thread together or touch a braking surface does not get painted.

That means no paint on things such as:

  • brake discs
  • pad friction surfaces
  • rubber boots
  • sliders
  • piston seals
  • bleed screw openings
  • threads
  • hose connections
  • machined mounting faces
  • functional contact surfaces

The goal is to change the appearance of the hardware.

Not the way the hardware works.

There are many areas of a campervan where improvisation can be entertaining.

The braking system is not one of them.

🧹 THE IMPORTANT BORING BIT

Everybody wants to see the orange paint.

Nobody gets excited about the wire brush.

But the wire brush probably matters more.

A beautiful coating over poor preparation is still poor preparation wearing a nice jacket.

The calipers have spent their lives living in one of the least glamorous places on the vehicle.

Brake dust.

Road dirt.

Moisture.

Heat.

Salt.

General British-road soup.

All of that needs to be removed.

The surfaces need to be cleaned, degreased and made sound before the white basecoat ever appears.

This is where the quality of the finished job really begins.

That dabbing technique is particularly interesting.

Rather than continually dragging the brush through the coating, a controlled dabbing action can help achieve coverage without creating huge obvious brush marks.

A tiny technique.

Potentially a big difference.

🤍 THE STRANGE WHITE PHASE

Once everything is properly cleaned and masked, the white base begins.

Several controlled layers make far more sense than trying to drown the caliper in one heroic coat.

Eventually there should be four wonderfully strange-looking white brake calipers sitting there.

And I absolutely want photographs at this stage.

Because the complete transformation should look brilliant:

OLD ➜ CLEAN ➜ WHITE ➜ ORANGE ➜ INSTALLED

That is the sort of before-and-after sequence I love.

🧡 THEN THE FUN STARTS

Once the white base is right, the Neon Orange lacquer is mixed with the supplied hardener.

This is a two-component coating.

Once those parts come together, the curing process has started.

So this is not the moment for wandering off, putting the kettle on and forgetting about it for three hours.

Then comes the first orange coat.

Thin.

Controlled.

Even.

The white underneath is already doing much of the heavy lifting.

Then another controlled coat begins to build that proper depth.

And somewhere during this stage, four ordinary pieces of Volkswagen brake hardware should start looking very different indeed.

PROJECT ORANGE HARDWARE IS ALIVE. 🧡⚡

🧡 ORANGE DOES NOT MEAN ORANGE EVERYTHING

One thing I absolutely do not want is the sort of paint job where every visible bolt, clip and random mechanical object gets covered because it happened to be nearby.

No.

The orange needs boundaries.

That is what will make it look deliberate.

The casting becomes orange.

The mechanical details remain mechanical.

That contrast is important.

Glossy Neon Orange beside dark metal, black hardware and champagne spokes will look far better than simply turning everything into one giant orange blob.

Restraint makes the colour stronger.

⏱️ THEN WE WAIT

This may be the most difficult stage for me.

😂

Fresh paint can look finished long before it is actually finished.

According to the FOLIATEC system guidance, the coating can reach a stage where the wheels can be refitted relatively quickly, but complete hardening takes considerably longer.

So the sensible answer is simple:

GIVE IT TIME.

The vehicle technician will be handling the calipers during reassembly, so there is absolutely no benefit in rushing beautifully painted components back onto the van only to mark them with tools.

Paint needs time to become coating.

The orange needs time to become armour.

⚙️ BACK TO BEING BRAKES

Once cured sufficiently, the calipers go back together properly.

Correct hardware.

Correct procedures.

Correct torques.

Correct brake-system checks.

If the hydraulic system has been opened, it gets properly bled and checked.

No shortcuts.

Because beneath the orange, these components still have one rather important job.

STOPPING THE VAN.

Vanilla has plenty of decorative bits.

The brakes are not decorative bits.

They just happen to be getting prettier.

🥂 AND THEN COME THE LV4s

This is the moment I have been picturing.

The finished Neon Orange caliper disappears back into the wheel arch.

Then the new champagne 17-inch Leighton LV4 goes over it.

And suddenly the entire idea should make sense.

Grey bodywork above.

Dark tyre.

Champagne wheel.

Black shadows behind the spokes.

Then...

🧡 FLASH.

A tiny section of Neon Orange.

Move around the wheel and it disappears.

Change the angle and it comes back again.

That is exactly the effect I want.

Not orange wheels.

Not an orange van.

Just one precise flash of colour hidden inside the machinery.

📸 THE PHOTO I ALREADY HAVE IN MY HEAD

I can already see the finished photograph.

Low angle.

Front three-quarter wheel.

Soft light across the Indium Grey paint.

The champagne LV4 dominating the foreground.

Chunky tyre underneath it.

Dark shadows between the spokes.

And tucked inside one of those openings...

THE ORANGE CALIPER.

Not shouting.

Not filling the frame.

Just sitting there waiting to be noticed.

That is much more NIX than simply throwing colour everywhere.

The more I build Vanilla, the more I realise the colour scheme has never really been random.

🩶 GREY

Roads.

Machinery.

Clouds.

Metal.

Industrial landscapes.

⚫ BLACK

Tyres.

Hardware.

Shadows.

Technical detail.

🥂 CHAMPAGNE

Something warmer.

Something slightly unexpected.

Something that lifts all the dark tones.

🧡 ORANGE

Energy.

Sunset.

Warning markings.

Heat.

Movement.

NIX.

It is the colour that joins everything together.

🧡 COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY

This may be my favourite thing about the whole project.

I do not need orange brake calipers.

Vanilla will not become faster because of them.

The braking distance will not suddenly shrink because the calipers have become fluorescent.

I am reasonably confident Volkswagen never published a performance graph showing the horsepower benefits of orange paint.

This is simply about detail.

Taking something that already performs a job and making it part of the visual story of the vehicle.

That is enough reason for me.

🔧 PROJECT ORANGE HARDWARE

Four calipers.

One Neon Orange coating system.

A ridiculous amount of preparation.

A vehicle technician making sure everything remains mechanically right.

And eventually four little flashes of colour hiding behind champagne LV4 wheels.

It is a tiny modification.

But tiny modifications can completely change the way something feels.

And this one feels very NIX.

CHAMPAGNE IN THE WHEEL.

And yes...

I am far more excited about painted brake calipers than any sensible adult probably should be.
