The tiny detail that’s about to change Vanilla’s whole stance

There are upgrades you notice from fifty yards away.

Then there are the little details you only spot when you get closer.

And somehow, those are often the best ones. 🧡

Well, technically, a FOLIATEC brake caliper lacquer kit ready to transform the existing calipers.

But in my head, I can already see the finished result.

And I think it’s going to look absolutely superb. 😎🔥

🧡 WHY ORANGE?

Orange has quietly become part of the DNA of NIX.

Dark graphite. Grey roads. Black hardware. Warm sunsets. And then that flash of orange cutting through everything.

It appears throughout the NIX look for exactly the same reason I want it on Vanilla.

It stands out without taking over.

And with Vanilla’s Indium Grey bodywork, orange has always worked ridiculously well. 🩶🧡

So when I started thinking about the next stage of the van’s transformation, painting the brake calipers suddenly made perfect sense.

Not bright red.

Not blue.

Definitely not disappearing behind the wheels in anonymous factory grey.

Orange. Obviously. 😂

This is all happening just as Vanilla is about to get one of her biggest visual changes yet.

The new 17-inch Leighton LV4 wheels in champagne gold, wrapped in chunky General Grabber AT3 235/65 R17 tyres, are going to completely change the stance of the van.

That combination should bring a proper adventure-ready, slightly swamper look while still being something I’m happy driving on normal UK roads.

And behind those champagne gold wheels?

A little flash of orange. 🟠

That’s the bit I’m really looking forward to.

Because the calipers shouldn’t dominate the wheel.

They should just appear between the spokes every now and again.

Gold. Black tyre. Grey van. Orange caliper.

That sounds very, very NIX. 🔥

I’ve gone for a FOLIATEC brake caliper lacquer set, and this isn’t simply a case of finding some orange paint in the garage and attacking the brakes with a brush.

The product is specifically intended for brake calipers and is designed to withstand the rather unpleasant life they lead.

Heat. 🔥 Brake dust. Road grime. Water. Salt. Chemicals.

Brake calipers live in one of the nastiest environments on a vehicle, so ordinary paint would be a fairly spectacular way of creating extra work for myself later.

The kit is designed for the job.

Even better, it can be applied without dismantling the calipers completely, although preparation is going to be absolutely crucial.

And preparation is where most paint jobs are won or lost.

🧽 THE BORING BIT THAT MAKES THE GOOD BIT GOOD

I know exactly what I’ll be tempted to do.

Open box.

See orange paint.

Grab brush.

START PAINTING. 😂

But no.

The calipers need properly cleaning first.

Brake dust, dirt, grease and corrosion all need dealing with before any colour goes anywhere near them.

The surfaces need to be as clean and properly prepared as possible because I want this to look like a proper little factory-style detail, not something slapped on during a Sunday afternoon with half a cup of tea left.

I’m not looking for perfection under a microscope.

I am looking for a finish that makes someone eventually crouch beside Vanilla and say:

“Those orange calipers look brilliant.”

That’ll do nicely.

🟠 THE COLOUR NEEDS TO PEEK, NOT SHOUT

This is important.

I don’t want four giant fluorescent blobs visible from space. 🛰️😂

The orange should be an accent.

You notice the wheels first.

Then the tyres.

Then the stance.

Then, perhaps a second later…

there it is.

A little orange caliper behind the spokes.

That layered discovery is exactly how I want Vanilla to look.

There should always be another detail.

Something else to notice.

Something else that makes the van feel personal rather than something assembled from a catalogue.

🩶🧡 THE NIX COLOUR SCHEME IS ESCAPING INTO THE REAL WORLD

I find this quite amusing.

What started as a colour scheme for NIX DRONES is increasingly appearing everywhere.

Graphite backgrounds.

Orange highlights.

Dark equipment.

Grey metal.

Warm sunset colours.

And now brake calipers. 😂

But there is actually a reason I keep coming back to it.

Grey is the colour of travel.

Tarmac. Mountains. Storm clouds. Machinery. Vans. Industrial landscapes.

Orange is the colour that cuts through it.

Sunset. 🌅 Fire. 🔥 Warning lights. Adventure equipment. That last bit of light disappearing behind a horizon.

Put those two together and you get something that feels completely right for NIX.

And completely right for Vanilla.

🔧 THIS IS EXACTLY THE SORT OF MODIFICATION I LOVE

Not every campervan upgrade needs to involve solar controllers, batteries, heaters, chargers or some mysterious cable disappearing under a seat.

because it looks brilliant.

And I’m perfectly comfortable with that. 😁

The orange calipers won’t give Vanilla another 20 horsepower.

They won’t improve the solar yield.

They won’t keep the fridge running longer.

They won’t help me find a campsite in Norway.

But every time I walk back towards the van and catch that little orange flash behind the wheel?

Worth it. 🧡

This is what I’m picturing:

Vanilla’s Indium Grey bodywork 🩶 Champagne Gold LV4 wheels 🥂 General Grabber AT3 tyres 🛞 White tyre lettering 🤍 Orange brake calipers 🟠 NIX orange details 🔥

It could be a magnificent combination.

Rugged without pretending to be a Dakar rally van.

Colourful without becoming gaudy.

Different without looking ridiculous.

And, most importantly…

mine.

So another little Vanilla project begins.

The box is here.

The paint is ready.

The calipers are waiting.

And somewhere underneath several years of road grime and brake dust are four components that are about to become considerably more interesting. 😂

It’s one of those jobs where I suspect the transformation is going to be much bigger than the amount of actual orange involved.

Because sometimes a build isn’t defined by its biggest modification.

Sometimes it’s defined by the tiny details that tie everything together.

And behind those new wheels, there is about to be a very small detail doing a very big job.
