OPERATION NEW WHEELS // THE LV-4 SETUP
OPERATION NEW WHEELS // THE LV-4 SETUP
There comes a point in every campervan project when you stop asking what you could change and finally work out what the van actually needs.
I think I’ve reached that point with Vanilla.
After looking at more wheel combinations than is probably healthy, the direction is now clear:
17-inch Leighton LV-4 wheels in Matte Champagne, wrapped in General Grabber all-terrain tyres.
Life with Vanilla
And looking at Vanilla imagined beside a Norwegian fjord, I think I've finally found the look.
NOT A SHOW VAN. NOT AN OFF-ROADER.
The aim was never to turn Vanilla into some enormous expedition truck.
At the campsite
She's still my VW T6.1 campervan.
She does long motorway journeys, weekends away, campsites, country lanes, bike trips and European touring. Increasingly, she's also going to have towing duties.
So I wanted something between standard campervan and hardcore off-roader.
A proper swamper-inspired setup.
That means a smaller wheel, more tyre sidewall, tougher styling and a stance that looks ready for gravel roads and rough campsites without ruining the comfort that makes a campervan enjoyable in the first place.
WHY THE LEIGHTON LV-4?
The LV-4 immediately stood out.
It's chunky without being ridiculous.
The simple, strong spoke design suits the shape of the Transporter, and the 17-inch diameter leaves room for a much deeper tyre than one of the huge 20-inch setups you often see on modified vans.
That's important to me.
Through the lens
I don't just want Vanilla to photograph well.
I want her to travel well.
The other attraction is that these are wheels designed with Transporters in mind rather than ordinary car alloys that happen to fit.
And there is another nice connection.
Vanilla originally came from Leighton Vans in April 2024.
So going back to Leighton for one of her biggest visual upgrades feels rather appropriate.
MATTE CHAMPAGNE WAS THE SURPRISE
Originally, black seemed like the obvious answer.
Vanilla is Indium Grey with plenty of black detailing already, so black wheels would certainly work.
The problem
But that's also the problem.
They would almost disappear.
The Matte Champagne LV-4 does something much more interesting.
Against the grey body it brings in a subtle bronze-gold colour without becoming flashy.
In bright sunshine it'll catch the light.
At sunset it'll look fantastic.
On a dull Tuesday morning in Stafford it'll still look grown-up.
Perfect.
The Norwegian image really settled it for me.
Grey van.
Dark mountains.
Golden evening light.
Champagne wheels.
That's the look.
THE TYRES MAKE THE SWAMPER
Of course, wheels alone aren't going to create the effect.
The tyres are arguably even more important.
The plan is to combine the LV-4s with General Grabber all-terrain tyres.
They have the chunky tread and stronger visual sidewall that gives the whole setup its adventure character.
More importantly, they're still designed to work properly on the road.
That's crucial because the overwhelming majority of Vanilla's miles aren't going to be spent crawling across a mountain.
They're going to be motorway miles, A-roads, wet British lanes and long touring days.
I want the tougher appearance without turning every journey into four tyres humming the soundtrack to a helicopter documentary.

WHY 17 INCH?
This might be the cleverest part of the whole change.
Modified Transporters often chase bigger wheels.
18-inch.
19-inch.
20-inch.
They can look fantastic, but the larger the wheel becomes, the less tyre sidewall you're usually left with.
I'm going the other way.
A 17-inch wheel allows more rubber between the road and the rim.
For a campervan that spends its life travelling, that makes a lot of sense.
Think potholes.
Broken road surfaces.
Gravel.
Grass pitches.
Farm campsites.
European mountain roads.
And the occasional road where the sat-nav confidently tells you everything is perfectly normal while the road itself appears to have been abandoned sometime during the Roman Empire.
More sidewall should suit Vanilla rather well.
APPEARANCE MATTERS
Let's not pretend this is purely an engineering exercise.
I want Vanilla to look brilliant.
I want to park her somewhere beautiful, walk away, turn around and think:
Yep. That's mine.
There's nothing wrong with that.
But the best upgrades are the ones where appearance and practicality meet.
With this setup I should get:
More tyre sidewall.
A tougher stance.
Properly load-rated wheels.
Better protection on poor surfaces.
Useful all-terrain ability.
And, hopefully, excellent touring manners.
That isn't simply decorating the van.
It's changing Vanilla to better suit the way I actually use her.

THE IMPORTANT BIT: GETTING THE NUMBERS RIGHT
Before anything gets fitted, there are still some proper checks to make.
Vanilla isn't a lightweight car.
She's a VW Transporter T6.1 T28 campervan, so wheel and tyre load ratings matter.
Then there's:
Wheel width.
Offset.
Tyre size.
Tyre load index.
Brake and caliper clearance.
Full steering lock clearance.
Suspension compression.
Overall rolling circumference.
Speedometer difference.
And compatibility with the weight Vanilla carries when fully loaded.
I'm also towing, so I'd rather get this absolutely right than buy wheels purely because they look good in a photograph.
The plan is therefore to talk directly to Leighton and get the complete combination confirmed before fitting.

FIT THEM AT LEIGHTON?
Ideally, yes.
Rather than having four boxes of wheels delivered to Stafford and then finding somebody else to fit them, I'd much rather make a day of it.
Have Leighton prepare the wheels and tyres.
Drive Vanilla over.
Get everything fitted.
Have the clearances checked.
And drive home with the complete job finished properly.
Because once you're spending this sort of money, there's little point saving the last few pounds by making the whole job harder.
THE TARGET SETUP
Vehicle: VW Transporter T6.1 SWB Highline campervan
Van: Vanilla
Wheel: Leighton LV-4
Diameter: 17 inch
Finish: Matte Champagne
Tyre: General Grabber all-terrain
Style: Mild swamper
Goal: Better stance, more sidewall, touring comfort and tougher looks
FROM CAMPERVAN TO ADVENTURE CAMPERVAN
I think that's why I'm so excited about this change.
It isn't going to completely transform what Vanilla is.
It's going to make her look more like what she has already become.
She's no longer just the nicely converted Transporter I bought in 2024.
She's travelled.
She's carried bikes.
She's been off-grid.
She's crossed countries.
She's become my little mobile basecamp.
So perhaps she deserves the footwear to match.
The huge wheels can stay on the show vans.
Vanilla is getting adventure boots.
And if the finished result looks anything like that Norwegian fjord image...
Operation New Wheels may finally be solved.
