OPERATION NEW WHEELS
# OPERATION NEW WHEELS
Vanilla Gets Her New Boots
Some upgrades are maintenance.
Some are improvements.
And some completely change the personality of a vehicle.
Vanilla’s new wheel and tyre setup falls firmly into that last category.
After weeks of looking at wheel sizes, colours, tyre profiles, stance, comfort and the kind of travelling I actually use the van for, the decision is finally made.
And this time, there’s no more “maybe”.
THE FINAL SETUP
Vanilla is getting:
LEIGHTON LV4
17-INCH • CHAMPAGNE GOLD
wrapped in:
GENERAL GRABBER AT3
235/65 R17
That combination is exactly what I wanted.
Not oversized show wheels.
Not skinny road tyres.
Not an extreme off-road build.
Instead, it’s a proper adventure-camper setup with a bit of muscle, plenty of tyre and one very distinctive wheel colour.
WHY CHAMPAGNE GOLD?
Black would have been easy.
Black wheels look good on almost everything.
But Vanilla is Indium Grey, and I wanted something with a little more character.
Champagne gold gives the wheel enough contrast to stand out against the body without becoming shouty.
It has warmth.
It looks premium.
And paired with a chunky all-terrain tyre, it gives the whole van a slightly Scandinavian, expedition-style feel.
That is exactly the direction I wanted.
The LV4 is already a strong-looking wheel.
In champagne gold, it becomes part of Vanilla’s identity.
THE GENERAL GRABBER AT3
The tyres are just as important as the wheels.
Possibly more important.
Vanilla will be running General Grabber AT3 tyres in 235/65 R17.
And this is where the whole look starts to come together.
The Grabber AT3 is a proper all-terrain tyre designed to combine road use with more adventurous surfaces. Reviews regularly praise its relatively civilised road manners for such a chunky A/T tyre, while still providing the tougher tread pattern and off-road ability I’m looking for.
The 235 width gives the van a broad, purposeful appearance, while the 65-profile sidewall gives me exactly what I wanted around a 17-inch wheel.
Proper tyre.
Proper sidewall.
Proper stance.
This isn’t a low-profile road wheel pretending to be adventurous.
There is actually some rubber there.
Exactly as it should be.
WATCH: GENERAL GRABBER AT3 REVIEW
This is a useful look at the General Grabber AT3, including how it behaves on the road as well as the sort of rougher surfaces the tyre is actually designed for.
THE SWAMPER LOOK
I’ve used the phrase “swamper look” quite a lot during this project.
But I don’t mean turning Vanilla into something that looks ready to cross the Amazon basin.
The idea is much subtler.
A little more rugged.
A little more capable.
More tyre.
More stance.
More presence.
Something that looks equally at home parked beside a Norwegian fjord, sitting on a muddy campsite in Staffordshire or towing a caravan down a motorway.
The 235/65 R17 Grabbers provide that visual weight.
And paired with champagne gold LV4s, I think they’re going to completely change the van.
WHY 17-INCH?
It would have been very easy to keep going bigger.
18-inch.
19-inch.
20-inch.
And eventually end up with a huge alloy and almost no tyre.
But that isn't what Vanilla is about.
She travels.
She camps.
She carries bikes.
She tows.
She goes down lanes, campsites and roads that occasionally appear to have been resurfaced using agricultural machinery and optimism.
So 17-inch feels right.
It leaves room for a proper tyre sidewall.
And visually, the wheel and tyre work together instead of the alloy completely dominating the van.
That’s important.
This setup isn’t about the biggest wheel possible.
It’s about the right wheel.
WATCH: VW TRANSPORTER TYRE OPTIONS
This Leighton Vans video is particularly relevant because it looks specifically at tyre choices for VW Transporters.
Wheel size is only half the story.
The tyre wrapped around it can completely change comfort, stance and character.
THE NUMBERS MATTER
Vanilla isn’t a lightweight little car.
She’s a VW Transporter T6.1 campervan.
That means wheel and tyre choices have to make sense beyond appearance.
You have to think about:
- wheel load rating
- tyre load rating
- overall rolling diameter
- clearance
- axle loads
- steering lock clearance
- suspension clearance
- road behaviour
- and towing performance
There is absolutely no point creating the perfect-looking van if it makes the actual vehicle worse to use.
The goal has always been very simple:
LOOK GREAT
DRIVE PROPERLY
KEEP VANILLA USEFUL
A VERY DIFFERENT STANCE
This is probably the bit I’m most excited about.
A 235/65 R17 all-terrain tyre has real visual presence.
There’s more sidewall.
More tread.
More shoulder.
More rubber filling the wheel arch.
The LV4 will grab your attention first.
But I think the Grabbers are actually what will transform the stance.
Vanilla should look taller, tougher and much more purposeful.
Not ridiculous.
Not cartoonishly off-road.
Just right.
TOWING STILL MATTERS
Vanilla isn’t being built purely for solo campervan trips.
She’ll be towing too.
So I never wanted to sacrifice comfort or usability purely to get a certain appearance.
A sensible 17-inch wheel with a substantial tyre profile feels much more appropriate for the way the van is actually going to be used.
Motorways.
Long-distance trips.
Camping.
Rougher surfaces.
Caravan towing.
And hopefully a fair few roads much further north.
That versatility is exactly what I want from the setup.
FITTING DAY IS BOOKED
This is where Operation New Wheels finally stops being a collection of screenshots, tyre-size calculations and mock-ups.
The fitting is booked.
MONDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2026
12 NOON
ROTHERHAM
Vanilla will be heading to Leighton Vans in Rotherham for the transformation.
And I can wait while the work is done.
That makes the whole thing even better.
I’ll arrive with Vanilla looking as she does today...
and leave with her sitting on champagne gold LV4s and General Grabber AT3s.
There’s something very satisfying about being there when an idea finally turns into something real.
I suspect I’ll spend a perfectly normal amount of time walking around the van afterwards.
And by “perfectly normal”, I mean far too long.
BACK TO LEIGHTON
There’s something quite fitting about this upgrade happening at Leighton Vans.
Vanilla originally came from Leighton.
Since then she’s gradually evolved.
The camper conversion.
The power system.
Solar.
Victron equipment.
Camping kit.
Bike carrying.
Technology.
Photography gear.
Little NIX details.
And now the wheel setup.
She’s becoming less like “a converted Transporter” and more like one very particular campervan.
Vanilla.
Leighton describe wheels and tyres as one of the quickest ways of dramatically changing the look of a Transporter, and they also make the point that tyre choice matters because it needs to suit where the van actually travels. That pretty much sums up this entire project.
BEFORE
Before fitting day I want one proper photograph of Vanilla.
Same camera.
Same angle.
No clever tricks.
No dramatic editing.
Just an honest record of how she looked before Operation New Wheels.
Because after 21 September, that version of Vanilla disappears.
AFTER
Then I want exactly the same shot again.
Only this time:
Champagne Gold LV4s
General Grabber AT3 235/65 R17s
Same van.
Same angle.
Completely different attitude.
No Photoshop required.
No mock-ups.
No wondering what she’ll look like.
The real thing.
THE DREAM VERSION OF VANILLA
I can already see it.
Vanilla somewhere in Scandinavia.
Indium Grey paint against dark mountains.
Champagne gold wheels catching the evening light.
Chunky Grabbers underneath.
Bike on the back.
Pop-top raised.
A road disappearing alongside a fjord.
And the van looking like she belongs there.
That’s what this upgrade is really about.
Not making Vanilla look like an off-roader.
Making her look like a campervan built to go places.
THE FIRST DRIVE HOME
The looks will be the first judgement.
The drive home from Rotherham will be the second.
I’ll be paying attention to:
- steering feel
- road noise
- motorway stability
- ride comfort
- braking feel
- vibration
- full-lock clearance
- and how Vanilla generally feels on the new setup
Then comes the real long-term test.
Campsites.
Long journeys.
Wet roads.
Rougher surfaces.
And eventually towing.
Because photographs only tell half the story.
The real review starts once the miles start accumulating.
THE NIX RULE
I’ve gradually developed a very simple rule for modifications to Vanilla.
They should do at least one of three things:
MAKE TRAVELLING BETTER
MAKE CAMPING BETTER
MAKE VANILLA MORE VANILLA
This setup should manage all three.
And aesthetically?
Champagne gold LV4s against Indium Grey with chunky General Grabber AT3s underneath...
I think we might have found the sweet spot.
So the final specification is locked in.
LEIGHTON LV4
17-INCH • CHAMPAGNE GOLD
GENERAL GRABBER AT3
235/65 R17
And now there’s a date on the calendar.
21 SEPTEMBER 2026
12 NOON • ROTHERHAM
The research is finished.
The mock-ups have done their job.
The choice has been made.
Next comes the good bit.
