ONE SCREEN. THE WHOLE OF VANILLA'S POWER STORY.
What one live VictronConnect snapshot reveals about solar generation, real consumption, battery state and the value of measuring an off-grid campervan properly.
This looks like a fairly ordinary phone screenshot. In reality, it is Vanilla's complete 12-volt electrical system reporting for duty: alternator charging waiting for the engine, a SmartShunt measuring every amp, and the roof solar panel still making useful power while the fridge and lights are running.
THREE BLUE BOXES, THREE DIFFERENT JOBS
At the top is the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A DC-DC charger. Its job is to take power from the VW alternator while I am driving and charge the leisure battery correctly. In this snapshot it is off, exactly as it should be with the engine stopped. The 11.86V shown is its dormant input side, not the leisure battery's state of charge.
In the middle is the SmartShunt, the system's accountant. It reports a leisure-battery voltage of 12.51V, a state of charge of 99%, a net current of -4.79A and only 2Ah consumed. At the bottom, the SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 is harvesting 18W, delivering 1.40A and has collected 50Wh so far that day.
WHAT THE NUMBERS REALLY SAY
The minus sign beside 4.79A matters: more power is leaving the leisure battery than entering it. At 12.51V, that net battery contribution is almost exactly 60W. The solar controller is simultaneously contributing another 18W, so the equipment switched on at that moment was using roughly 78W in total, allowing for the fact that the readings are live and may update a fraction apart.
That is why 'solar is charging' does not always mean the battery percentage must rise. The panel was helping, but the fridge and lights wanted more than the available sunshine could supply. Solar covered about a quarter of the demand and the battery quietly supplied the balance. Nothing was wrong; the system was doing precisely what it was designed to do.
The panel was making power. The battery was still discharging. Both readings were correct.
WHY 99% IS NOT A CONTRADICTION
The battery had only recently come off charge and the SmartShunt showed just 2Ah consumed from a nominal 110Ah AGM bank. A displayed 99% state of charge is therefore entirely reasonable even while the live current is negative. State of charge describes how much energy remains; current describes what is happening this second.
The estimated 11 hours 50 minutes remaining is useful, but it is not a countdown carved into stone. A compressor fridge cycles on and off, lights may be switched off, and solar output rises and falls. The estimate will move as the load changes—rather like a vehicle range display, only without a service station appearing at the next roundabout.
THE REAL OFF-GRID WIN
The impressive part is not one spectacular number. It is that every part of the system is visible and understandable. I can see when the alternator charger is resting, what the battery is actually supplying, how much solar is contributing and whether the overall energy balance is sustainable.
With the fridge and lights running, Vanilla was comfortable, the AGM was virtually full, and even modest midday solar was reducing the load on it. When the engine runs, the Orion can add up to 30A of controlled charging. On hook-up, the mains charger takes over. My Jackery power stations provide further portable reserves for cooking, gadgets and moving energy where it is most useful.
That is what makes Vanilla a proper off-grid system rather than a collection of gadgets. The sun, alternator, hook-up, leisure battery and Jackery fleet each have a job. VictronConnect lets me watch them perform it—and stops guesswork becoming an electrical strategy.
PROFESSOR SPARKS' VERDICT
Healthy battery. Sensible live load. Useful solar contribution. Alternator charger correctly asleep. No mystery and no drama.
This single screen is a neat demonstration of why proper monitoring matters. Vanilla was using around 78W, the solar panel was supplying about 18W of it, and the battery was covering roughly 60W. At 99% state of charge, it had plenty in reserve. That is a well-balanced little off-grid power station—just one with curtains, a fridge and considerably better parking options.
