Nix Drones

There was never really a grand business plan.

No boardroom. No marketing department. No polished five-year roadmap.

That is where NIX DRONES really began.

Not as a company. Not as a polished brand. Not even as a conventional website.

It started as a place to put things.

Photographs. Flights. Trips. Gadgets. Routes. Experiments. Ideas. Places worth remembering.

Then, quietly, it became something much bigger.

NIX DRONES is difficult to squeeze into a neat little box.

Calling it a drone website misses most of the story.

Yes, drones are part of it.

There is Nemesis, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Zoom, the Mini 4 Pro. Sneaker, the tiny Neo 2. And Twitch, the little Spark that still deserves its place in the fleet.

But the cameras soon escaped the drone bag.

The DJI Action 4 came along. Then iPhone photography. Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The Canon DSLR.

Before long, NIX DRONES was documenting life from the sky, the road, the handlebars and everywhere in between.

The name stayed.

The idea grew.

Every good story needs a proper machine in it.

Mine happens to be a 2022 Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 called Vanilla.

Indium Grey. Orange details. Camper conversion. Pop-top roof.

And increasingly, a rolling laboratory for ideas.

Vanilla has carried cameras, drones, bikes, solar panels, power stations, camping kit and enough electrical monitoring equipment to make the average campsite pitch look suspiciously like mission control.

She has crossed countries, followed coastlines, disappeared down back roads and provided a front-row seat to some unforgettable places.

Campervan travel became one of the main threads running through NIX DRONES.

Not simply where did I go?

But:

That is a much more interesting question.

One of the biggest NIX adventures so far was the European Drift.

Roughly 4,000 miles.

Twelve countries.

Weeks of roads, campsites, cities, villages, motorways, mountain scenery and those little accidental discoveries that no itinerary ever manages to predict.

Bruges.

Deventer.

Hannover.

Wolfsburg.

Munich.

Cheb.

De Panne.

Dunkirk.

And thousands of miles connecting them together.

Trips like that changed what NIX DRONES needed to become.

A photograph alone was no longer enough.

I wanted the route.

The story.

The weather.

The places.

The little details you forget six months later.

The website gradually evolved into a personal digital atlas.

A record not just of destinations, but of movement.

Enter Torque.

A Scott Aspect eRIDE 910.

Bosch motor. 600 Wh battery. Chunky tyres. Orange details.

And suddenly another door opened.

Trails.

Canals.

Forest tracks.

Quiet lanes.

Cannock Chase.

Routes that would never make sense in a campervan became completely accessible from the saddle.

Photography changed too.

The bike could carry a camera into places a van could never reach.

The drone could go up.

The Action camera could roll.

The phone could capture everything in between.

TRAIL became another part of the NIX world.

Not fitness statistics for the sake of statistics.

Exploration.

Technology appears everywhere on NIX DRONES because technology makes these adventures possible.

Some of it is sophisticated.

Some of it is gloriously unnecessary.

Quite a lot of it probably began with the sentence:

Solar controllers.

SmartShunts.

Power stations.

Portable projectors.

Cameras.

Bike lights.

Mobile broadband.

Navigation.

Smart sensors.

Induction cooking.

Charging systems.

Bluetooth speakers.

The gadgets are never really the destination.

They are tools.

Tools that let a campervan stay off-grid longer.

Tools that turn a bike ride into a film.

Tools that let a photograph capture something impossible from ground level.

Tools that make life on the road slightly easier, slightly smarter, or occasionally just much more fun.

That has become the biggest change.

NIX DRONES originally stored things.

Now it tells stories.

A photograph of Vanilla beside a mountain road is no longer simply a campervan photograph.

There is a journey behind it.

A drone image contains a flight.

A bike photo contains a trail.

A solar graph contains an experiment.

A photograph of a new wheel might contain weeks of research, fitment questions, load ratings, suspension repairs and far too many late-night searches for tyres.

The interesting bit is rarely the object.

The interesting bit is what happened around it.

That is why stories have moved to the centre of NIX DRONES.

Photography has always been important to NIX.

Now Flickr forms part of the site's content system.

A photograph can carry much more than pixels.

The image becomes the visual.

The title becomes the headline.

The description provides the story.

Albums create collections.

Tags create connections.

Click a photograph and there is another layer waiting behind it.

That idea fits NIX perfectly.

Keep the surface clean.

Keep the depth underneath.

If somebody wants to wander further, there should always be another doorway.

Over time the site developed its own visual language.

Dark graphite.

Indium Grey.

White typography.

NIX orange.

Large photography.

Clean layouts.

Cinematic transitions.

Very little clutter.

The inspiration sits somewhere between modern editorial design, travel photography, automotive culture and the obsessive simplicity of good technology products.

The goal is simple:

Everything else should know when to keep quiet.

That may be the most important thing about NIX DRONES.

There is no final version.

There probably never will be.

A new trip creates another story.

A new gadget creates another experiment.

A new photograph creates another connection.

A new road extends the map.

A new idea becomes another little corner of the site.

And occasionally an innocent five-minute website tweak turns into an entire evening involving maps, APIs, photographs, databases, CSS and several cups of tea.

Such is progress.

More travelling.

More photography.

More drone flights.

More trails.

More stories.

Scandinavia is waiting.

There are still roads across Britain I have never driven.

There are tracks I have never ridden.

There are photographs I haven't taken yet.

And there will inevitably be another gadget I absolutely definitely do not need.

NIX DRONES will keep recording all of it.

Not as a perfectly curated highlight reel.

But as something much better.

A living archive of adventures, machines, photographs, journeys and ideas.

Part photography site.

Part travel journal.

Part campervan diary.

Part drone log.

Part cycling story.

Part technology playground.

Part digital attic full of things worth keeping.

But mostly...

The roads travelled.

The photographs captured.

The machines used.

The experiments that worked.

The experiments that absolutely did not.

And all the stories that happened along the way.
