NIX // COCOFIRE

Coconut water just entered the ginger-shot laboratory.

The NIX Shots experiment has taken another little turn.

The rule remains untouched:

30% ginger. Always.

That is the backbone of every NIX Shot. No token sprinkle of ginger hiding somewhere near the bottom of the ingredients list. These are supposed to taste like ginger shots.

But this batch has a new ingredient.

Coconut water.

And rather surprisingly, it makes a lot of sense.

WHY COCONUT WATER?

Most of my ginger shots have been built around fruit juice.

Apple brings sweetness. Lemon brings sharpness. Cranberry brings that deep fruity bite.

Coconut water does something different.

It doesn't try to dominate the flavour.

Instead, it softens the edges slightly and gives the shot a cleaner, lighter finish while still allowing the ginger to remain right at the front.

The result should be refreshing rather than syrupy.

Still fiery.

Still unmistakably NIX.

Just wearing sunglasses. 😎🥥

THE FIRST NIX // COCOFIRE RECIPE

For a 600 ml batch:

180 ml ginger

30% of the entire mix

60 ml lemon juice

For acidity and freshness.

240 ml apple juice

For natural sweetness and body.

120 ml coconut water

For the lighter tropical finish.

Total:

600 ml

Which means:

10 x 60 ml NIX Shots

Perfect.

THE FLAVOUR

The first hit should still be ginger.

That warm, sharp kick is the whole point.

Then comes the apple and lemon, taking some of the aggression out of it before the coconut water leaves a much cleaner finish.

It isn't supposed to taste like a coconut cocktail.

In fact, that would probably ruin it.

The coconut water is there quietly doing its job in the background.

Think:

GINGER → CITRUS → APPLE → CLEAN FINISH

Rather than:

COCONUT!!!

THE NEXT VERSION

There is already another variation calling.

NIX // COCOFIRE TROPICAL

Keep the sacred 30% ginger, but swap some of the apple for pineapple.

Something around:

  • 180 ml ginger
  • 60 ml lemon
  • 180 ml pineapple
  • 60 ml apple
  • 120 ml coconut water

That could be very interesting indeed.

Pineapple naturally works brilliantly with ginger, while the coconut water should stop the whole thing becoming too sweet.

That one feels dangerously close to becoming a permanent NIX Shot.

FREEZER FRIENDLY

One of the best things about the NIX Shot system is making them in proper batches.

Fill the little 60 ml bottles, freeze them, then take out what is needed.

Coconut water should work perfectly well with that system.

Give the bottle a good shake once defrosted and it is ready to go.

Simple.

No powders.

No complicated supplements.

Just actual ingredients.

THE NIX SHOT RULE

The recipes can change.

The fruit can change.

The experiments will definitely continue.

But one thing isn't changing:

30% GINGER.

Because once you start watering ginger shots down until ginger becomes a footnote, you've rather missed the point.

COCOFIRE keeps the fire.

It just gives it a tropical cooling system.
