CHASING THE SHADOW — Filming an Eclipse with a Drone

An eclipse is already extraordinary to witness. Add a drone, a landscape and a rapidly changing sky, and it becomes something else entirely.

CHAPTER

WHEN DAYLIGHT STARTS TO DISAPPEAR

There are some things you can film again.

A sunrise will come back tomorrow. Fog will eventually roll through another valley. Even the perfect golden-hour flight, painful as it might be to miss, will give you another chance.

An eclipse is different.

You get a window measured in minutes, sometimes seconds, and whatever happens during that window is what you get.

No pressure, then.

Standing beneath a changing sky with a drone ready to fly, the strange thing is how normal everything feels at first. The landscape is still there. The light looks familiar. The aircraft is behaving exactly as it should.

Then the Moon starts stealing the Sun.

And the entire atmosphere changes.

CHAPTER

THE VIEW FROM ABOVE

The obvious temptation when filming an eclipse is to point everything at the sky. But with a drone, the more interesting story can be happening underneath it.

The aircraft gives you something a conventional camera cannot easily provide: scale. From altitude, roads become lines through the landscape. Fields turn into blocks of colour and texture. Trees, buildings and people become tiny reference points beneath an enormous sky.

As the eclipse develops, those familiar features begin to look different. That is the shot.

FILM THE LIGHT, NOT JUST THE SUN

There is another practical reason for concentrating on the landscape: a standard drone camera isn't an astronomical telescope.

Trying to make the Sun enormous in the frame isn't where most drones are at their best, and pointing a camera directly towards intense sunlight also demands appropriate equipment and care.

Instead, the drone can capture the environmental transformation. Exposure changes. Colours shift. Shadows become unusual. The horizon can take on an eerie quality that feels more like the opening scene of a science-fiction film than an ordinary afternoon.

For cinematic footage, that transition is gold.

CHAPTER

ONE FLIGHT. ONE CHANCE.

Eclipse photography rewards preparation. Drone filming adds another list of things that need to be right: batteries, storage, camera settings, flight location, airspace, weather and the legal conditions for the flight itself.

Then there is timing.

The worst possible moment to discover a nearly full memory card is when the sky is doing something it won't repeat for years.

So the plan is simple: prepare everything before the interesting light arrives. Fresh battery. Empty card. Lens clean. Camera configured. Flight checked.

Then leave enough capacity to bring the aircraft home comfortably rather than trying to squeeze every last second out of the battery. Because however impressive an eclipse looks, it is not going to retrieve your drone from a field.

CHAPTER

WHEN THE WORLD GOES STRANGE

This is the part photographs struggle to explain. An eclipse doesn't simply make everything darker. The light feels wrong.

Your brain knows what daylight is supposed to look like, and suddenly the rules have changed. Colours flatten. Contrast shifts. Depending on the circumstances, the landscape can acquire a strange metallic quality.

From the ground it is fascinating. From the air, it can be spectacular.

CHAPTER

SHOOT SLOWLY

When something spectacular happens, the natural reaction is to start moving the drone everywhere.

Don't.

Some of the strongest aerial footage comes from doing almost nothing: a slow push forward, a gentle rise revealing the horizon, a locked-off hover while the light changes around the aircraft, or a gradual orbit around a strong foreground subject.

The eclipse is already providing the drama. The drone doesn't need to perform aerobatics to prove it was there.

Smooth movement also gives the footage room to breathe in the edit. The aim isn't merely to record an astronomical event. It's to capture what being there felt like.

CHAPTER

AND THEN THE LIGHT COMES BACK

For all the preparation, equipment and excitement, perhaps the strangest moment is when it ends.

The landscape starts returning to normal. Exposure climbs. Familiar colours creep back into the scene. The peculiar atmosphere begins disappearing almost as quickly as it arrived.

The drone comes home. Motors stop. And suddenly you're standing there with a memory card containing a few minutes of something that felt much bigger.

CHAPTER

WHY PUT A DRONE IN THE AIR FOR AN ECLIPSE?

Not because it gets you significantly closer to the Sun. A few dozen metres of altitude isn't going to make much difference there.

It is because a drone lets you tell the other half of the story. The eclipse happens in the sky, but its shadow belongs to the landscape.

Seeing that landscape from above — watching familiar scenery transform beneath an extraordinary sky — gives the event a sense of scale that is difficult to reproduce from ground level.
