Cannock Chase Visitors Centre

There are places you travel miles to discover, and then there are places sitting almost on your doorstep that somehow manage to feel like a miniature expedition every time you arrive.

Cannock Chase is one of those places.

At the heart of it is the Cannock Chase Visitor Centre at Marquis Drive, a wonderfully unfussy starting point for exploring one of Staffordshire’s finest landscapes.

No giant attraction.

No manufactured theme-park polish.

Just woodland, heath, trails, wildlife, history, bikes, boots, muddy tyres and that unmistakable feeling that the Chase carries on far beyond whichever track you have decided to follow.

And that is exactly how it should be.

A great introduction to the landscape, wildlife and character of Cannock Chase.

There are grand visitor centres around Britain with enormous shops, restaurants and shiny displays.

Marquis Drive is not really that sort of place.

And I rather like it for that.

It feels more like a base camp.

Park up, work out where you are heading, grab some information, have something to eat or drink, then disappear into the Chase.

Walking routes spread out from the area and the Visitor Centre gives you a convenient place to start and finish.

There is also plenty of history around here.

The RAF Hednesford Memorial is nearby, a reminder that this peaceful landscape has a military past as well as a natural one.

You can come here for a walk and accidentally wander into history.

Cannock Chase never seems content to be just one landscape.

One moment you are underneath tall trees with sunlight flickering across the track.

Then the forest opens.

Heather appears.

The horizon suddenly becomes enormous.

A few minutes later you are dropping into another wooded section where everything becomes quiet again.

The wider Chase contains heathland, forests, wetlands, open spaces and huge stretches of woodland.

And then there are the deer.

Seeing deer quietly moving between the trees remains one of those wonderful Cannock Chase moments when everybody instinctively slows down.

Camera out.

Voices down.

Just watch.

For me, Cannock Chase and mountain bikes are almost inseparable.

There are gentle tracks where you can simply explore, but the Chase has a completely different personality when you point a mountain bike towards its proper trails.

Roots.

Rock.

Mud.

Fast flowing forest sections.

Sharp climbs that looked perfectly innocent about thirty seconds earlier.

And occasionally that little internal conversation:

“I am fairly certain this looked easier on YouTube.”

The famous Follow the Dog and Monkey Trail riding is based around the Birches Valley side of Cannock Chase rather than Marquis Drive.

But together they show just how varied the Chase can be.

You can have a peaceful morning wandering around Marquis Drive and a considerably more energetic afternoon on the bike.

Cannock Chase can be ridden throughout much of the year, although the character of the trails changes dramatically once Staffordshire rain gets involved.

Translation:

The mud will eventually find you.

Perhaps that is the real strength of Marquis Drive.

You do not need a mountain bike.

You do not need walking poles.

You do not need a meticulously planned 14-mile route uploaded to three different apps.

You can simply arrive.

Walk.

Sit.

Have a coffee.

Take photographs.

Listen to the trees.

Watch wildlife.

Bring the family.

Bring the dog.

Or disappear down a path simply because you have never taken that particular turning before.

Sometimes the best outdoor days are the ones without a spreadsheet.

Cannock Chase gets a lot of visitors.

That popularity creates a simple problem.

We love the place because it feels wild.

Keeping it wild means treating it properly.

Stick to established routes where appropriate.

Give wildlife space.

Keep dogs under proper control.

Take rubbish home.

Respect sensitive areas.

It really is not complicated.

Enjoy it.

Do not wreck it.

The countryside has been successfully operating that particular system for rather longer than we have.

There are major plans to improve the visitor facilities at Marquis Drive.

Staffordshire County Council has announced investment in the area aimed at creating better facilities while also helping visitors understand the importance of protecting Cannock Chase.

That could be a very exciting next chapter.

The trick will be improving things without polishing away the character that makes the Chase special in the first place.

Hopefully the trees remain firmly in charge.

Trees: several million.

Visitor centres: considerably fewer.

There is parking at Marquis Drive and the area is an excellent starting point for walking, wildlife watching and exploring the wider Chase.

If you are travelling specifically to use the Visitor Centre or café, it is worth checking the latest opening information before setting off because opening can vary.

If you are heading specifically for the main mountain-bike trails, Birches Valley is the better starting point.

Cannock Chase Visitor Centre is not really the destination.

Cannock Chase is.

Marquis Drive is simply where somebody has thoughtfully provided a doorway.

From there you can make the day whatever you want it to be.

A ten-minute wander.

A long walk.

A wildlife hunt.

A photography trip.

A muddy bike ride.

A history lesson.

Or simply somewhere to escape traffic, screens and the relentless pinging of modern life for a while.

And perhaps that is why I have always liked the Chase.

It never demands that you do anything.

It simply provides the space.

You decide what happens next.

Boots. Bikes. Cameras. Forest. Repeat.
