A Grand Day Out at Waddesdon Manor
Sunshine, gardens, elephants and a rather splendid lunch with Fiona.
There are some places that make an impression before you have even properly started exploring, and Waddesdon Manor is certainly one of them.
A suitably grand arrival
Fiona and I had the perfect weather for our visit: warm sunshine, a big blue sky and just enough dramatic cloud to make everything look even more impressive in the photographs. As we approached the Manor, its towers, turrets and golden stone immediately gave the day a wonderfully grand sense of occasion.
The building is magnificent from every angle. There is an extraordinary amount of detail in the stonework, windows and roofline, while the beautifully clipped gardens and ornate fountains make the whole setting feel almost theatrical. It is the sort of place where you keep stopping, turning around and discovering another view worth photographing.
Sunshine on the terraces
Fiona looked completely at home among the terraces and formal gardens, and the sunshine certainly did us proud. We spent plenty of time wandering around, taking photographs and enjoying the views across the estate.
With the fountain, the pale stone and the huge summer sky behind us, there seemed to be another ready-made photograph at every turn. Waddesdon does not exactly believe in understated backdrops—and I am certainly not complaining.
An extraordinary house, glorious weather, good food, plenty of laughter—and a family of elephants with an obvious talent for photographs.
A garden full of colour
The rose garden was particularly lovely, filled with soft pink flowers and surrounded by magnificent mature trees. It offered a gentler contrast to the grand architecture and immaculate formality around the Manor.
It was one of those peaceful corners that rewards slowing down. The flowers, dappled light and blue sky combined into one of my favourite photographs of the day.
Into the grotto
We also explored the shady woodland and rocky grotto areas. These felt completely different from the bright, open terraces around the Manor. With enormous rocks, cool caves, water features and lush planting, they provided a welcome escape from the sunshine and another excellent backdrop for the camera.
The mixture of weathered stone, tiny pools, statues and greenery gave this part of the grounds a wonderfully secretive atmosphere. Naturally, I found a bench and made myself comfortable for the photograph.
The elephants in the grounds
Away from the formal grandeur, we found some of the more playful parts of the grounds. The remarkable woven elephant sculptures were impossible to walk past without stopping for photographs.
Naturally, both Fiona and I had to investigate them properly. They are beautifully made, full of character and considerably more cooperative than real elephants when it comes to posing for pictures.
A rather splendid lunch
No proper day out is complete without lunch, and ours certainly looked the part. We stopped for a relaxed meal and enjoyed two beautifully presented plates, followed by a good cup of tea.
It was all very civilised—the sort of lunch that makes you sit back and admit that life is treating you rather well. Even the food looked as though it had dressed up for a day at Waddesdon.
