There are sensible people who buy a robot mower, let it cut the lawn and then leave it alone.
I am apparently not one of those people. 😂
My ECOVACS GOAT O800 RTK already wanders around the lawn doing a remarkably sophisticated job of something that once involved me pushing a mower up and down in straight lines.
It maps the garden.
It navigates using RTK, LiDAR-enhanced positioning and cameras.
It avoids things.
It works its way neatly around the edges.
And underneath all that technology?
Three tiny swinging razor blades.
Which inevitably led to one question:

And just like that, another NIX experiment was born.

🐐 MEET THE GOAT
The ECOVACS GOAT O800 RTK is designed for lawns of up to 800m² and uses a 22cm cutting system with adjustable cutting height between 30mm and 80mm.
ECOVACS quotes mowing efficiency of approximately 140–180m² per hour, depending on conditions. It combines RTK navigation with cameras and 3D ToF sensing, while the mower itself is rated at just 57dB.
That means this isn’t some plastic toy shuffling randomly around the lawn.
There is a surprising amount of technology happening beneath that white shell.

✂️ THE STANDARD THREE-BLADE SETUP
From the factory, the O800 RTK comes with three cutting blades, and ECOVACS also supplies spare blades.
The cutting width remains 22cm.
The blades aren’t rigidly bolted in position like the blade underneath an old petrol mower.
They pivot.
As the cutting disc spins, centrifugal force swings them outward.
They meet a blade of grass…
snip.
Then another.

Then several thousand more.
Simple.
Effective.
And proven.
But here’s where the engineer inside my head starts tapping the glass.

⚙️ THREE BLADES VS SIX BLADES
A six-blade conversion doesn’t magically give the mower a 44cm cutting width.
That would require a much larger cutting disc and probably result in my GOAT attempting to scalp the flowerbeds.

The mowing diameter remains essentially the same.
What changes is the number of cutting edges passing through that circle during each revolution.

So, in very simple terms, six blades provide twice as many blade opportunities during each rotation.
That does not automatically mean the mower cuts twice as well.
But it could mean that each clump of grass has more opportunities to meet a cutting edge as the mower moves across it.
And that is interesting.

That is the theory.
Now we need to distinguish theory from lawn reality.

🌱 THE LITTLE ROBOT-MOWER MOHAWK
Anyone who has watched a robotic mower long enough will occasionally see it.
One stubborn tuft of grass survives.
The robot travels past it.
The lawn around it looks lovely.
And that solitary blade stands there like it has just won a duel.

Robot-mower owners sometimes call these little survivors mohawks.
Six cutting edges could potentially reduce them simply because more blades cross the cutting circle while the mower is travelling forward.
There are already GOAT owners experimenting with multi-blade discs.
In one ECOVACS GOAT owner discussion, users reported a cleaner-looking cut, fewer surviving tufts and a more carpet-like finish after switching to multi-blade discs. Those are individual owner experiences rather than controlled ECOVACS testing, so I’m treating them as interesting evidence rather than gospel.
And that’s precisely why I want to test it myself.

🔧 THE DISC I’VE FOUND
One particularly interesting option is made by 3Dcbm.
Their six-blade cutting disc explicitly lists:

The manufacturer describes it as an injection-moulded glass-fibre-reinforced plastic disc with over-moulded stainless-steel threaded inserts.
Importantly, it uses the familiar blade mounting arrangement rather than requiring some completely alien cutting system.
That is much more interesting to me than buying the cheapest anonymous plastic disc I can find online.
Because this thing spins.
Fast.
Underneath an expensive robot.
There are places to save £15.
The rapidly rotating bit with six razor blades attached probably isn’t one of them.

There is also a six-blade disc from 3DHerb, again specifically listing compatibility with several GOAT models including the O800.
It too is described as being manufactured from glass-fibre-reinforced material rather than basic printed plastic.
At the time I checked, the manufacturer was showing the disc at €29.90, although prices and UK delivery costs can obviously change.

🧮 BUT WILL SIX BLADES CREATE MORE DRAG?
Now we reach the bit that interests me almost as much as the lawn.
Because there is no free lunch in engineering.
Adding more blades means adding more cutting edges into the rotating system.
Potentially that could mean:
⚡ slightly greater motor load 🔋 slightly higher power consumption 🌱 more grass accumulating around the cutting disc ⚙️ additional resistance in thick grass 🧹 potentially more frequent underside cleaning
The important word there is:
potentially.
I haven’t found controlled ECOVACS data showing the power difference between its standard three-blade carrier and an aftermarket six-blade version.
Power and charging
So claiming something like “six blades uses 8% more battery” would simply be making a number up.
And that’s not how I’m doing this test.
Some GOAT owners who’ve tried aftermarket multi-blade arrangements report no obvious battery penalty, while others have raised the same perfectly sensible question about additional motor load.
So battery performance is going straight onto my test sheet.

🧪 THE NIX GOAT SIX-BLADE EXPERIMENT
This is where things become considerably more interesting.
Rather than fit the new disc, look at the lawn for five minutes and announce:
“Yep. Better.”
I’m going to treat it properly.
PHASE ONE: BASELINE
Run the GOAT using the standard three-blade disc.
Record:
🌱 grass condition 📏 cutting height 🌧️ weather 💧 whether the lawn is wet or dry ⏱️ mowing time 🔋 battery consumption 🏠 charging behaviour 🌿 visible missed tufts ✂️ quality of the cut 🧹 grass buildup beneath the mower
Then photograph several fixed sections of lawn.
Same places.
Same angles.
Same lighting where possible.

⚙️ PHASE TWO: SIX BLADES
Install the six-blade carrier.
Use six identical fresh blades.
Then repeat the same mowing routine.
I’m particularly interested in five things.
1️⃣ CUT QUALITY
Do the ends of the grass look cleaner?
2️⃣ THE MOHAWK TEST
Are there fewer random tufts left standing?
3️⃣ FINISH
Does the lawn genuinely look smoother or more carpet-like?
4️⃣ BATTERY
Does the GOAT use noticeably more energy completing the same area?
5️⃣ CLEANING
Does twice the blade count produce noticeably more grass buildup underneath?
That should give us something approaching a meaningful comparison rather than lawn-based astrology.

🔋 THE BATTERY QUESTION
This might end up being the most interesting part.
The O800 RTK uses a 4,000mAh lithium-ion battery.
If the six-blade carrier creates meaningfully more resistance, I’d expect that eventually to show itself through one or more of:
🔋 shorter mowing sessions ⚡ more frequent charging ⏱️ longer overall completion time 🔥 higher sustained motor load
But if mowing efficiency remains effectively unchanged?
Then we’ve potentially gained a finer cutting action with little practical downside.
That would make the upgrade far more compelling.

🔊 WHAT ABOUT NOISE?
The standard O800 RTK is quoted at 57dB.
I don’t expect six blades suddenly to turn it into a Spitfire.
But I will be listening for:
👂 additional whirring ⚙️ vibration 🔊 resonance ✂️ a different cutting note
Unexpected vibration in particular would make me stop the test immediately.
A rotating disc needs to be balanced properly.
If my GOAT starts crossing the lawn sounding like a washing machine containing a trainer, something has gone wrong.

⚠️ THE IMPORTANT WARRANTY BIT
There is one very important caveat.
ECOVACS’ own blade-replacement instructions state that owners should use ECOVACS-manufactured blades and new screws when replacing blades. ECOVACS also instructs users to power the mower off, wear protective gloves and ensure the blades can rotate freely after installation.
So a six-blade aftermarket cutting carrier is exactly that:
AFTERMARKET.
It isn’t the factory configuration.
I’m therefore keeping the complete original three-blade setup.
That way the mower can be returned to standard configuration whenever necessary.

🧤 FITTING IT SAFELY
This is the bit where the jokes stop briefly.
There are actual razor-sharp blades underneath this machine.
Before touching the cutting assembly:
1.
Power the GOAT completely off.
2.
Wear decent protective gloves.
3.
Turn the mower carefully onto a soft surface.
4.
Remove the original cutting assembly carefully.
5.
Inspect the new disc before fitting.
Check for:

6.
Use six matching blades.
The problem
I wouldn’t mix:
old and new blades,
different blade brands,
different weights,
or random screws.
7.
Make certain every blade pivots freely.
That last point is specifically included in ECOVACS’ blade-replacement procedure.

🪒 WHY SHARP BLADES MATTER MORE THAN BLADE COUNT
There is another important point here.
A six-blade mower with six blunt blades isn’t necessarily superior to a three-blade mower with three razor-sharp ones.
A cleanly cut blade of grass heals better and looks better.
A dull blade can tear and bruise the grass instead.
So before declaring six blades victorious, the comparison needs to be:

Otherwise we’re testing blade condition rather than blade quantity.

Which presents another variable.
Wet grass behaves very differently from dry grass.
It sticks together.
It clumps.
It can accumulate beneath the mower.
So I actually want to see how six blades cope in:

I’m rather less interested in sending it into a monsoon just to prove a point.

🔬 WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN
My working hypothesis is fairly straightforward.
I don’t expect:
❌ twice the mowing speed ❌ twice the cutting width ❌ twice the battery consumption ❌ some miraculous golf-green transformation overnight
What I do think is plausible is:
✅ fewer isolated missed blades ✅ slightly more consistent cutting ✅ finer clipping ✅ smoother overall appearance ✅ potentially slower wear per individual blade because six cutting edges share the work
That last point is also claimed by aftermarket six-disc manufacturers, although I want to see how it performs over time rather than simply accept the claim.

🐐 THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS SORT OF TECH
Modern robotic lawnmowers are fascinating because they sit at a weird crossroads.
On one side:
satellites.
AI.
computer vision.
LiDAR.
mapping algorithms.
wireless connectivity.
automated charging.
Then, underneath the machine:
six quid’s worth of tiny metal blades beating up some grass.

I love that.
And modifying the cutting disc doesn’t change the clever part of the GOAT.
The navigation remains the same.
The map remains the same.
The RTK system remains the same.
The mowing width remains essentially the same.
We’re simply changing what happens during the final few millimetres between machine and grass.
Sometimes that is where the biggest visible difference appears.

So that’s the plan.

Photograph the lawn with the standard three-blade setup.

Record normal battery performance.

Fit six fresh blades.

Repeat for several mowing cycles.
STEP SIX
Photograph everything again.
Then we’ll answer the question properly.

Not because the internet says it is.
Not because a seller says it is.
Not because six is a bigger number.
We’ll find out on the lawn.

And that’s perfectly fine.
A useful experiment doesn’t have to prove the modification was brilliant.
It just has to answer the question.

The GOAT O800 RTK is already one of those pieces of technology that quietly changes a household routine.
It disappears onto the lawn.

No fuel.

No Sunday afternoon disappearing behind a lawnmower.
Now I’m going to see whether one small piece of engineering underneath it can make that already impressive job just a little bit better.
Three blades have done a fine job.
But six blades are coming.
